My day off has finally arrived, and I decided to go out and do some exploring of Jersey. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, so it meant that I could do something outdoorsy! First off, I managed to find La Hougue Bie, which is a dolmen, topped with a church.
I was really lucky, because upon turning up, I discovered that it was actually closed for the Winter season, but due to an art event, the gate was unlocked and I was very kindly allowed to enter! I couldn’t get into the dolmen itself unfortunately, but I got to walk around the church(es) which was cool. It’s a really unique location!
La Hougue Bie |
After a walk up to the top, into the crypt (which had I had to crouch to get into), and around the bottom, I had seen all I could at La Hougue Bie. I wish I could have gone into the dolmen, but I was lucky to even get to look around. Perhaps if I am working in Jersey again in the Summer months, I’ll be able to visit again so that I can look around the museum when that’s open.
Lovely to see some snowdrops! |
Anyway, onwards to my next location…
Mont Orgueil Castle |
Mont Orgueil was just a short drive away – that’s one massive advantage of being on a tiny island! I hadn’t been to a castle in years so it made a really nice change! It was £11.50 to get in, and I spent a couple of hours wandering around, reading the history and climbing loads and loads of steps haha!
In the top left and bottom right images you can see where look-out towers were adding during the German occupation, but actually blend really well with the rest of the castle. It’s an interesting addition to the long history! And might I add, after climbing right to the top, the views are stunning – I could see France!
The colour of the water was gorgeous! And it was warm enough to walk around without a coat and scarf on too, so that was an additional bonus.
Hello! |
So it’s been a great day. I just wish I could have shared it with someone else! But, I only have one more week left until I can go home…this last stretch can’t go quick enough now. I have enjoyed exploring (on my days off) but I’m looking forward to seeing Dave, cooking my own meals, and sleeping in my own bed!
